I was wondering why so many people seem to have such trouble with four-wheelers. How can you simply sit there stock still while your ATV slowly rolls into a ditch?

A first timer on a quad is always a good time. They all make the same mistake. Turn the handlebars and expect to turn.
With a solid rear axle low speed maneuvers require throttle too otherwise you’re going where ever it’s already pointed.
